Special Harbour Events

Sydney Harbour plays host to a number of special events throughout the summer months.

The fabled New Year’s fireworks display is certainly the most famous, but the excitement of the start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race on Boxing Day is hard to beat.

If anything comes close, it would have to be the thrilling ferrython that takes place each Australia Day, where iconic Sydney ferries are pitted against each other in a race down the Harbour.

New Year’s Eve on Sydney Harbour

New Year’s Eve on Sydney Harbour is a grand spectacle that must be experienced at least once in a lifetime. A private luxury charter will provide you with front row seats to the action and uninterrupted views of the 9.00pm and midnight fireworks.

The celebrations kick off early as a plethora of boats descend on the Harbour and settle in for an unforgettable night of festivities. The crowds are kept entertained with aeronautical displays, tug demonstrations, pylon projections, a sacred Aboriginal smoking ceremony and a floating light parade. At 9pm the Harbour lights up with the family firework display before the all-encompassing main event at midnight.

Australia Day

The Harbour is the centrepiece of Australia Day celebrations. The program for the day is non-stop and action packed. The main event is the Ferrython; a ferry race that starts at Fort Denison, travels down the Harbour to Shark Island before returning to finish under the Bridge. The impressive regalia of the ferries is matched only by the teeming spectator fleet that falls in alongside to cheer on their favourite ferry.

Some of the other popular events on the jam packed program include a 21 Gun Salute, a tall ship race, jet fly-overs, aerial displays, tug boat ballet, helicopter search and rescue demonstrations and a floating stage featuring performances from local artists.

Boxing Day - Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race

The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is an iconic holiday tradition. Every Boxing Day, a fleet of international and local yachts depart Sydney Harbour to contest one of the toughest blue water classics in the world.

Be part of the excitement and anticipation as they jostle for position on the start line. When the gun fires at 1:00pm you will be alongside the action and follow the fleet as they make their way for their way out of the Harbour, heading for Bass Strait and Hobart.

The race out Sydney heads is always hotly contested and you and your guests will have a ringside view of the action aboard a luxurious, private boat. The race start is a perfect way to showcase Sydney Harbour to visiting relatives and friends.

After the yachts have cleared the Harbour, your skipper will whisk you away to a quiet anchorage where you can swim, have lunch and experience the enjoyment of being on the Harbour in the middle of summer.
